Cladding is on and brickwork has started. The scheme adds five shop units, 4,000 sq ft of offices and a multi-storey car park, and the banking hub has one.
The new Sainsbury’s in Whitehill and Bordon has an estimated opening date of spring 2027, and East Hampshire District Council says construction is running to programme. Much of the cladding is on and brickwork has started on the lower levels.
The building is not only a supermarket. A steel structure attached to it will hold five smaller shop units at ground level, with more than 4,000 sq ft of office space for small businesses above them. A multi-storey car park is going up alongside, and its stairwell and lift block are already in place.
One of those five units is spoken for. The town’s banking hub has confirmed it will take one, which answers a question left open since the hub opened in 2025.
Why the banking hub matters here
Whitehill and Bordon had no bank counter at all between 2017 and 2025. Lloyds closed its branch in 2017, and nothing replaced it.
The hub that opened in April 2025 was always described as temporary. When East Hampshire District Council announced it in March 2025, it said the service would “open first in a temporary location in The Shed while a permanent site is sought”. More than a year later, Cash Access UK’s own page for the hub still lists its status as “Banking Hub open in temporary home”.
The hub runs from The Shed, Sergeants Yard, Bordon, GU35 0DJ, from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, closed at weekends and on bank holidays. Any bank’s customers can use the counter for cash, cheques, bills and balances. Community bankers attend on set days:
- Monday: Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland
- Tuesday: HSBC
- Wednesday: Barclays
- Thursday: NatWest
- Friday: Santander
What the council has and has not committed to
The 7 August update came from a site visit by Cllr Andy Tree, the council’s deputy leader and portfolio holder for the Whitehill and Bordon area, with James Child, project lead at the Whitehill Bordon Regeneration Company.
Read the wording carefully and the limits are clear.
- Spring 2027 is an estimate, not a fixed date. The council calls it “an estimated opening date”.
- The opening date is not the council’s to set. Once construction finishes, the site is handed to Sainsbury’s, which does the internal fit-out, recruits staff and makes “final decisions around opening dates”.
- Only one of the five shop units is confirmed. The council says interest has been expressed in the others, without naming anyone.
- No date is given for the banking hub’s move. The council says only that the hub will take a unit.
Child said the project has “stuck to our planned programme” and called the foodstore “a key milestone” and “an important part of the town centre”.
What it means for you
- Nothing changes at The Shed yet. The banking hub keeps its current address and hours until the new unit is ready, and no move date has been published.
- If you want one of the four remaining shop units, the interest is with the Whitehill Bordon Regeneration Company rather than the council.
- The office space is aimed at small businesses, at more than 4,000 sq ft across the floor above the shops.
- Expect the car park to change how you approach the town centre. A multi-storey is a different traffic pattern from surface parking, and construction traffic is on those roads in the meantime. Current closures are on our roadworks and travel page.
