Petersfield Christmas Lights Switch-On: 7pm in The Square

Petersfield’s Christmas lights switch-on happens in The Square, it is run by Petersfield Town Council, and in both of the last two years the lights have gone on at 7pm on the last Friday in November.

As of 4 September 2026 the council has not published this year’s date. This page sets out what is fixed, what the pattern points to, and the stale page that will send you on the wrong evening if you trust it.

The 2026 date has not been announced

There is no 2026 switch-on page on the town council’s site. Its upcoming events page currently carries a single entry, for a wellbeing walk, and nothing festive.

What the council does have is a run of past events with a clear shape:

The last Friday in November 2026 is 27 November. That is where the pattern points, and it is not a confirmation. Treat it as a date to keep free, not a date to book around, and check the council’s site before you set out.

What the evening actually looks like

The council published a full running order for the 2024 switch-on, and it is the best guide anyone has to the shape of the night:

So it is a two-hour community event that ends shortly after the switch itself, not an all-evening affair. Local school and community choirs fill the stage beforehand.

The 2025 night ran to the same pattern. The Alton Herald, reporting on 24 November 2025 ahead of that year’s switch-on, gave Friday 28 November at 7pm in The Square, with carols, stalls and entertainment, performances by local school groups and theatre choirs, and the Petersfield Salvation Army Band.

The Winton House Centre, which had a stall, confirmed the same evening afterwards and adds a detail that does not appear on the council’s own material: alongside the stalls there was a toy tombola and a children’s treasure hunt, with the treasure buried in The Spain, at the bottom of Sheep Street.

The page that will send you on the wrong night

Petersfield Lions Club has a page titled Christmas Lights Switch On that opens: “We were looking forward to a great time at the Petersfield Christmas Lights Switch On, on Friday 24th November in the Market Square.”

There is no year on it anywhere. The 24th was a Friday in 2023. In 2026 it is a Tuesday. That page is three years old and still surfacing in search.

Free parking, if the council repeats it

The one practical concession worth knowing about: for the 2024 event the council put free parking from 3pm in the Central, Swan Street, Castle Yard and Festival Hall car parks.

That was announced on the 2024 event page and has not been announced for 2026. If it is repeated it will appear on the council’s event page nearer the time, so do not assume it. Our parking in Petersfield page has the normal tariffs, including the awkward split where Castle Yard and Festival Hall are free on Sundays and Swan Street, off the same street as Castle Yard, is not.

The Square is in the town centre, so check roadworks and travel if you are driving in. There is no temporary road closure order for a late-November event in Hampshire County Council’s East Hampshire public notices list today.

Who runs it, and since when

Petersfield Town Council has organised the switch-on since 2013, when it took it over from the Association of Petersfield Businesses. The council set that out in its own write-up of Christmas Lights 2018, which also records a turnout of around two thousand people that year.

It is a separate event from the Petersfield Christmas Market, which is run by Petersfield Community Events and is confirmed for Sunday 13 December 2026.

Still to be confirmed: the 2026 date, the stage line-up, whether free parking is repeated, and whether the late-night shopping evening that ran on Thursday 4 December in 2025 comes back. Expect the council to post in October or early November. This page will be updated then.
