What the inspector found at the Hawkley Inn

A rating is built from three scores. The register entry for the Hawkley Inn records these:

Area inspected Standard found
Hygienic food handling Improvement necessary
Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building Good
Management of food safety Major improvement necessary

So the building itself was marked good. The low rating comes from how food was handled on the day and, mostly, from the management of food safety. That covers the checks, records and staff training an inspector relies on to trust that standards will hold.

The pub has not published a right to reply on the register. It can ask East Hampshire District Council for a re-inspection once it has made improvements, and it can appeal the rating. The Food Standards Agency sets out those safeguards for businesses.

Headley, Kingsley and Lasham are all between ten and thirteen miles north of Petersfield. Four Marks and Ropley are seven to nine miles north-west.

Last month’s low ratings still stand

Both low ratings in our September roundup are unchanged on the register as of 1 November:

  • Yum Yum Thai, Dragon Street, Petersfield: still 1, from the inspection on 27 August
  • Great Wall Bordon limited, Petersfield Road, Whitehill: still 2, from 12 August

A short list, and why

Seventeen ratings in about six weeks is far fewer than the 55 in our last roundup. The register shows only ratings that have been published. A business must be told its rating within 14 days and then has time to appeal, so ratings from mid and late October are not there yet. Expect more in our next roundup.

What it means for you

  • Check before you book. Every rated premises is on the free Food Standards Agency register, with the three area scores behind the number.
  • Read the three scores, not just the sticker. At the Hawkley Inn the building was marked good; the problems were in handling and management.
  • Check the date. A rating is a snapshot of one day. A business may already have asked for a re-inspection.
  • Businesses that think a rating is wrong should contact East Hampshire District Council’s environmental health team.
