47 of 55 East Hampshire food inspections since 11 August earned a 5, including M&S and Aldi in Petersfield. One Dragon Street restaurant was rated 1.

Forty-seven East Hampshire food businesses have been given the top food hygiene rating of 5 since our last roundup. That is 47 of the 55 inspections published for the district since 11 August.

The figures come from the Food Standards Agency register for East Hampshire District Council, read on 25 September 2026. They cover inspections carried out between 11 August and 21 September.

One new rating went the other way in Petersfield itself. Yum Yum Thai on Dragon Street was rated 1 at an inspection on 27 August.

New 5s in and around Petersfield

A 5 for the Hen & Chicken

The Hen & Chicken Inn at Upper Froyle, near Alton, was rated 5 on 15 September. In our last roundup on 2 September, the pub was listed with a 2 from an April inspection.

The register now shows it under a new entry, and the earlier entry with the 2 has gone. The inspector marked all three areas as good: food handling, the condition of the building and the management of food safety.

Four businesses were rated 4 (good): The Plump Duck, Petersfield (12 August); Whitehill on Wednesday, Whitehill (19 August); Madhuban Restaurant, Liss (2 September); and Ritas Pizza, PO8 (2 September).

Two neighbouring businesses on Oak Green Parade in Four Marks were rated 3 (generally satisfactory): The Saffron on 25 August and The Tall Ship on 26 August. Four Marks is about nine miles north-west of Petersfield.

Yum Yum Thai follows the pattern we found across the district earlier this month. Its food handling was marked good, and the 1 comes from the management of food safety: the systems, training and records an inspector relies on. Neither business has published a right to reply on the register.

Great Wall Bordon limited is a new register entry at the Wittcomb Terrace address. An older entry for Great Wall at the same address still shows a 3 from February 2025. Whitehill is about eight miles north-east of Petersfield.

Both businesses can ask the council for a re-inspection once they have made improvements. They can also appeal, and can publish a right to reply alongside the rating. The Food Standards Agency sets out those safeguards for businesses.

Why September looks so clean

Of the 28 inspections published so far for September, 26 earned a 5 and the other two a 4. That is partly timing, not just good news.

A business must be told its rating in writing within 14 days, and it then has time to appeal. Lower ratings are held back while that window runs, so a 5 reaches the register sooner than a 1. Expect a few lower September ratings to appear in October.

What it means for you

  • Check before you book. Every rated premises is on the free Food Standards Agency register, with the three area scores behind the number.
  • Read the three scores, not just the sticker. A 1 for paperwork is not the same as a 1 for a dirty kitchen.
  • Check the date. A rating is a snapshot of one day, and a business may already have asked for a re-inspection.
  • Businesses that think a rating is wrong should contact East Hampshire District Council’s environmental health team.
