The Watercress Line's Father Christmas Express runs 12 to 24 December 2026 from Ropley, £27.50 a child. QECP's grotto runs 12 to 23 December, £15.95 a child.
Two organisers near Petersfield have already published their Father Christmas dates and prices for 2026, and both were taking bookings on 25 September. The Watercress Line’s Father Christmas Express runs from Ropley on seven dates between 12 and 24 December. Queen Elizabeth Country Park’s Christmas at the Park, with an elves’ workshop, a trail and a grotto, runs on seven dates from 12 to 23 December. The town’s own Christmas market on 13 December has Father Christmas listed only as a possible visitor. Every fact below is from the organiser’s own page.

Father Christmas Express, Ropley
The Watercress Line’s Christmas train runs from Ropley to Medstead, the highest station on the line, and back, with Father Christmas on board and his helpers in the carriages. Each child collects a magic token to swap for a present at “Present Junction” on the return to Ropley. Activities run from 9:30am to 3:30pm and the train departs from Ropley only, not Alresford or Alton (Watercress Line).
Around the train ride at Ropley there is an activity trail with elf doors, a miniature railway, a letter-writing table, reindeer food to make, a giant gingerbread photo frame and Father Christmas’s throne. New for 2026 is a bubble waffle stand with festive ice cream.

Every ticket is sold individually and booking in advance is essential. Under-2s with a present-only ticket sit on a lap. Flexible tickets cost a little more and can be moved with three working days’ notice or refunded to a gift card with five. Standard tickets cannot be refunded. Extras bookable in advance include a hot chocolate with a gingerbread man for £6, a mince pie for £2, an elf hat for £2.50, a festive picnic box at £15.95 and a children’s box at £6.25. The accessible carriage is only on trains from Alresford, so families needing it should ring 01962 733810 before booking.
One warning about the organiser’s page: on 25 September it still carried a banner reading “This Event Has Now Finished” above the 2026 dates, left over from last year. The 2026 dates, prices and booking link beneath it are current.
Christmas at the Park, Queen Elizabeth Country Park
The country park’s version is a two-hour outdoor experience. Children decorate a Christmas decoration in the elves’ workshop, walk the Christmas trail with a booklet, then visit Father Christmas in his grotto at the visitor centre and receive a gift, plus a token for a free babycino at the Beechwood Kitchen. The park says it suits ages 2 to 9 (Queen Elizabeth Country Park).
- Dates: Saturday 12, Sunday 13, Saturday 19, Sunday 20, Monday 21, Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December 2026.
- Sessions: 9:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am and 1pm each day.
- Price: £15.95 per child, no charge for adults. Non-refundable and non-transferable.
- Parking is charged on top, £2 an hour or £7 a day in winter, and the park warns the car park fills on December weekends. Arrive 15 minutes early; late arrivals cannot be moved to another slot.
- Dogs can join the trail but not the workshop or the grotto.
Book a ticket for every child taking part and give each child’s name and age. Younger siblings who are not taking part do not need a ticket. Our Queen Elizabeth Country Park page has the winter hours and parking.
Steam Illuminations, Alresford and Alton
Not a grotto, but the Watercress Line’s other Christmas train: carriages lit inside and out with thousands of synchronised LEDs, live entertainers, a host, a light-up wristband to keep and a “Snow Light Cascade” at the summit. It runs from 27 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, departing from either Alresford or Alton and returning to the same station, about 1 hour 45 minutes. Until 28 December the soundtrack is Christmas music; from 29 December to 2 January it switches to a party edition. Alresford station gets a Christmas village with a marshmallow toasting area (Watercress Line). Prices were not on the organiser’s page when we checked; they are shown at the booking stage.
In the town
The Petersfield Christmas Market on Sunday 13 December, 10am to 3:30pm, lists Father Christmas as “possibly making an appearance”, and the organiser has not firmed that up; see our Christmas market page. The Christmas lights switch-on in The Square is normally the last Friday in November; our switch-on page has the pattern and the 2026 date as soon as the town council names it.
Christmas at Chawton
Jane Austen’s House at Chawton, near Alton, dresses the house for Christmas from Wednesday 18 November to Wednesday 30 December, with a family present trail included in admission, twilight tours on Friday and Saturday evenings, a candlelit concert on Saturday 5 December and Jane Austen’s birthday on 16 December. It is closed over Christmas itself and reopens from 28 to 30 December (Jane Austen’s House). No Father Christmas, but the quietest festive outing in the district.
Getting there
Ropley is off the A31 between Alton and Alresford, about 25 minutes from Petersfield; the Father Christmas Express has its own car park at Ropley. Queen Elizabeth Country Park is on the A3 south of the town at Gravel Hill, PO8 0QE.
