Council car parks in Petersfield and Alton are free until 1pm on Remembrance Sunday, 8 November, and you need not pay on RingGo. Updated November 2026.

Parking in East Hampshire District Council’s car parks in Petersfield and Alton will be free until 1pm on Remembrance Sunday, 8 November, the council has announced.

The council says the offer is there to help “make it easier for people to attend local services”. Payment machines will be covered to show that no charge applies, and one thing could catch drivers out: “The RingGo app may still show the option to pay for parking, but you do not need to make a payment during these hours.”

Where it makes a difference in Petersfield

Two of the town’s council car parks are already free on a Sunday. The change matters at the other three, which normally charge from 10am to 4pm, the hours that cover the morning’s parade and service, under the council’s 2026 parking charges order.

And in Alton

The same order sets a flat Sunday charge of £1.50 for any length of stay at five Alton car parks: Turk Street, Lady Place, Bank, Mount Pleasant and Manor Road. Church Street, Vicarage Hill, Victoria Road and Rogers Court already have no Sunday charge.

Alton’s parade forms up in Market Square at 10am and marches off at 10:30am to the Cairn for the service, according to Alton Town Council.

What it means for you

  • Leave the car and go. Until 1pm you do not need a ticket or a RingGo session in a council car park in either town, even if the app offers you one.
  • Watch the clock if you are staying on. The free period ends at 1pm, and the normal Sunday charges at the car parks above run until 4pm.
  • It covers Petersfield and Alton only. The council’s announcement does not mention its car parks anywhere else in the district.
  • Holybourne’s parade is on Saturday 7 November, so it falls outside the offer.

The services

Councillors from across the district will represent the council and lay wreaths at services in their own communities, alongside residents, veterans, serving personnel and community organisations, the council says.

Petersfield’s parade and service are held in The Square, followed by the war memorial on the High Street. The town council and the district council had not published this year’s times when we checked on 5 November; last year’s service began at 10:15am. Our Remembrance Sunday page has the arrangements around the district and will carry the 2026 times as soon as they appear.
