Steam Illuminations runs on 25 evenings from 27 November to 2 January. Seats are £37 for adults and children; three 5 and 6 December trains are sold out.
Steam Illuminations is on again this Christmas. The Watercress Line runs its light-show steam train on 25 evenings from Friday 27 November 2026 to Saturday 2 January 2027, from Alresford or Alton, and every departure, price and sold-out train below was read from the railway’s own booking system on 18 October 2026 (Watercress Line booking).
The quick answer
- Is it on? Yes. The railway has published every 2026 date and opened booking (Watercress Line).
- Dates: 27 to 29 November, then 3 to 6, 11 to 14 and 16 to 23 December, 27 to 31 December and 2 January.
- Times: trains leave Alresford at 4.10pm and 6.50pm and Alton at 4.25pm and 7.05pm, and come back to the station they left from. The trip takes about 1 hour 45 minutes.
- Price: standard seats are £37 for an adult and £37 for a child aged 2 to 15. Under-2s go free, without a seat of their own. A first-class table for two is £94.
- Selling out: the 4.10pm from Alresford on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December and the 4.25pm from Alton on Saturday 5 December were already sold out.
- Nearest end for Petersfield: Alton, but the accessible carriage only runs on trains from Alresford.
What it is
The train is lit inside and out with thousands of LEDs that change in time to the music. There are live entertainers in the carriages, a host the railway bills as “Voiceover Man” from Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor, a singalong game and a new Christmas quiz. New for 2026 is a “Disco Ball Alley” section of mirror balls, and the “Snow Light Cascade” at the far end of the run has been extended. Every ticket includes an LED wristband that lights up with the show, and it is yours to keep (Watercress Line).
There are two editions. Until 28 December it is Christmas Vibes, with Christmas songs. From 29 December to 2 January it becomes Party Anthems, with hits from the 1960s to now. Alresford station has light projections, the talking and singing trees and a Christmas village of chalets with a new marshmallow toasting area.

Tickets and prices
On the booking page for the first departure, Friday 27 November from Alresford, the prices were (Watercress Line booking):
- Standard class, adult: £37, open coach seating, and you may share a table with another party.
- Standard class, child aged 2 to 15: £37.
- Child under 2: free, booked alongside a paying ticket, with no seat of their own.
- First class, table for two: £94. Sharing a table for four with another party: £90. A table for four to yourselves: £188.
- Compartments (up to six people) were £265 in standard and £300 in first class; both showed sold out on that train.
The same £37 standard price showed on the Saturday 28 November and Friday 11 December trains we checked. E-tickets are emailed.
Changing or cancelling. Standard tickets cannot be refunded. With at least three working days’ notice by email to the railway, it will try to move a booking to another date, time or station, for a £20 admin fee. Flexible tickets cost a little more: they can be moved with three working days’ notice and refunded with five. If you want to sit with friends, put everyone on one booking, because separate bookings are not guaranteed seats together. Seats are allocated automatically and printed on your ticket when you check in.
Wheelchair users. There are a limited number of spaces in an accessible carriage on trains from Alresford only; there is no accessible seating from Alton. Book these by phone on 01962 733810 or by email to the railway’s reservations team.
Alton or Alresford from Petersfield
Alton is the nearer end of the line for Petersfield. The two stations are:
- Alton station, Station Road, GU34 2PZ. The Watercress Line uses platform 3, next to South Western Railway’s platforms 1 and 2. Parking is in the station car park, run by South Western Railway: £9.30 on weekdays and £4 at weekends, cash or RingGo location 77475.
- Alresford station, Station Road, SO24 9JG. The car park is run by Winchester City Council. Pay for “over 3 hours”, then collect a customer voucher from the booking office or information office that lets you park all day for £4; cash or RingGo location 42519. Extra parking opens at Perins School during the school holidays (Watercress Line: how to find us).
Without a car, the Stagecoach 38 runs between Petersfield and Alton, but the railway says it does not run on Sundays and is less than hourly, so check the last bus back before you book an evening train. Alton is also on South Western Railway’s line from London Waterloo.
Friday 27 November is also the evening of Alton’s Christmas lights switch-on and market, 3pm to 7pm in the town centre, so expect a busy town if you take the 4.25pm or 7.05pm from Alton that night. Our Alton switch-on page has the detail.
For Petersfield’s own car parks, see parking in Petersfield, and check roadworks and travel before you set off.
Not the same as the Father Christmas Express
The Watercress Line’s other Christmas train, the Father Christmas Express, is a daytime trip from Ropley with a present for each child, from 12 to 24 December. Steam Illuminations is an evening light show with no Father Christmas visit. Our Father Christmas near Petersfield page compares the grottos and trains.
